Autumn 2009
Dear Students and Friends,
My mini-sabbatical from teaching has been rich with blessings. I immersed myself in writing and took intensive writing classes at the University of Iowa where I was really able to get going. I had many visits with my dear Mother this year until she passed away late in the summer. Thanks to all my patients and students for allowing last minute schedule changes so I was able to be with her.
With these changes I am adjusting my calendar to continue my writing and my grieving process. I will be offering a monthly one-day class here in Juneau over the next three months.
Each class will have an optional morning meditation and lecture and an afternoon energy healing class component. People can register for one or both parts, and for all three classes or any single class they wish. Anyone attending the entire series receives a $10 discount when registering for the third. Early full-day registrants also receive a discount. Whether you are a beginner or if you have taken classes with me before you may enjoy the intensive day of immersion as a personal retreat and balancing opportunity. You will gain tools to continue using over your lifetime for ongoing health, balance and well-being.
There are no pre-requisites for any of these classes. Early registration recommended.

I leave you with some thoughts for the season, which will be appearing in my Neighbors Medicine column in the Juneau Empire after I edit it down. This comes from a journal entry last February in Florida and is a good reminder of the struggles that bring us to using energy healing as a way to break free.
Sitting on the Florida porch patiently waiting the storm. I watch the bamboo wind chime cords tangle in each other, looping over and over in the brisk movement of the air. The same movement that will bring us a thunder shower across the lake.
I debate in my mind, should I get up and free those cords from their entanglement? I realize they will just go right back to another entanglement so I don’t intervene.
Entanglement a spontaneous activity, just like it is for us. Entangled minds, entangled relationships, even our energy flow blocked to its natural flow by all the entanglements, like a river polluted with garbage, or obstructed by downed trees. Attracted in fact to the entanglement, so much that we sometimes don’t notice the hooks there until the familiarity of that sinking feeling, the block to the natural movement of our soul. Whatever way we are pulled takes us and we go, abandoning our wisdom and greater knowing, we give in to the age-old patterns well rutted in our souls, in our structural frameworks.
I see this in myself and with my patients, seeing them entangle as we humans do, again and again, before making a change. Just like me. So painful to change, at least we assume so, since some of the edges are so exquisitely painful, even unconsciously avoiding doing it differently. We kick and scream when change occurs at first, and then once we give in and also experience the ecstatic exuberance of finding a new path, a new way, beyond that age old entanglement, it becomes not only easier to notice the hooks ahead, but we eventually are repulsed rather than pulled by them.
Now THAT is healing. Certainly not necessarily cure, but healing.
This is life. We find hooks everywhere. Over time, as we grow and age we are pulled and hooked in many directions, family and career being only some of them.
Over and over we move back and forth doing the same dance, moving from entanglement to letting go of entanglement, back and forth. We reach ecstasy and we pull right back into a familiar entanglement. Back and forth we go. This is what is there in the depth of self. It’s truly a mix.
The blend is what keeps us going, keeps us all alive, that exquisite movement. The same movement that brings the needed rain tangles the bamboo music. Is any of it bad? Not at all. Will the momentum inconvenience us? Possibly. The directions of the change take us to places we don’t want to go? Maybe.
It’s a gamble. A crapshoot. Life is like that. Disease is like that. Treatment is like that. Healing is like that. Even cooking dinner is like that. We have the hooks pulling the old way and we have the momentum right next to the hook to go another way, or several other ways. We feel the pulls, we feel the atmosphere of the unseen directions looming out there. And we have no idea really what we will encounter. What we experience will be different at this moment than at any other. And the choice I make will feel different for me even if you make a very similar choice for you. So every time, whether we follow the hook or one of the “other” directions, we again encounter both uncertainty and a fresh beginning.
That’s why whatever the healing path or life path, just being astutely aware and present can be valuable input on the journey, and part of the healing itself. Every mistake of a sacred nature, as we use it to reset the compass, to figure out how we need to move differently. We know the yes feeling and the no feeling and the mistake feeling. But we sometimes don’t take notice until after we are already moving so quickly in the opposite direction that it can be very confusing.
So just notice each of these feelings, and every time you notice any of the three, just say it to yourself or out loud. Yes feeling. No feeling. Mistake feeling. The mistake feeing usually comes strongest when we ignore a yes or no feeling and do the opposite. With practice, just noticing the red lights and green lights within, you can change direction more and more quickly to integrate your movement and follow your deeper knowing. With increased awareness it’s like being in slow motion. By just being present you will notice tiny changes, and gradually bigger ones as the hooks become more apparent earlier on, and you spend less and less time all tangled up. This is how we change.
You can do it anyway you like, give it any language you like. Red light, green light, the sirens of mistake when you stop at the yes or proceed through the no’s. Whatever language you give it in your noticing, be gentle and go softly with yourself. Stoke your cheek when you feel the mistake feeling arise. “There I go again” you might say to yourself. And then move differently. Before you know it, you will have made a change because it will be too painful to stay entangled.
Have fun! Now I go to play in the wind, maybe the rain, while the bamboo either becomes more or less entangled in this wind of life.
Best wishes to you all as you move through the dark season. As always, thank you for telling others about my work and sending interested people my way.
Maureen Longworth, M.D.
